Ragusa has two souls: Ragusa Superiore, the modern part of the city, and Ragusa Ibla, the old part, built along the original medieval plan.
Ragusa Ibla is a journey through Sicilian Baroque, with its maze of neighbourhoods, panoramic stairways, fountains, fragrant gardens and churches with sculpted stone facades. A special view of Ibla is from the churchyard of the Church of Santa Lucia: you will feel as if you are standing in front of a postcard.
When in Ragusa, a visit to the Giardino Ibleo is a must. Stroll along avenues dotted with palm trees, benches and vases carved into the limestone. Then, you come to elegant stone balconies with splendid views over the Irminio Valley and the Hyblean Mountains.
What about the Duomo di San Giorgio, a true gem of Baroque architecture? The façade is marvellous, the dome imposing and the Gothic-Catalan portal beautiful.
The other famous church in the city is in Ragusa Superiore and is dedicated to San Giovanni Battista. The façade has numerous stone carvings and sculptures. It is divided by large columns and enriched by three majestic portals.
Ragusa fascinates you and invites you to discover its treasures. Discover them without haste and relax while enjoying a delicious almond granita.
